An Inclusive Scout's Prayer

Tomorrow at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is Scout Sabbath and well will honor all our Scouts and leaders, current and former. For an appropriate inclusive prayer I took Sir Robert Baden-Powell's (he founded the Boy Scouts) and tinkered to bring it more into the current. Given the current" scouting controversy I felt it might be just a bit more appropriate.

An Inclusive Scout's Prayer

Oh, Lord of our choosing, make us TRUSTWORTHY, for there are those who may trust us.
Make us LOYAL, for through loyalty we reach our highest ideals.

Teach us to be HELPFUL, for through helpfulness we forget our selfness.

Make us FRIENDLY, for there are so many who need a friend.

Let us be COURTEOUS and tolerant, for they are the carpet on life’s floor.

Make us KIND, for kindness and love, above all, are the oil for life’s machinery.

Be OBEDIENT, for to succeed together, we must follow a good leader.

Be CHEERFUL, for cheerfulness is the green grass along the rocky path of life.

Help us to remember that THRIFTY habits brighten our future promise.

Make us BRAVE in the dark and BRAVE in the light; but guide us from becoming false in bravery.

Help us to be CLEAN – clean in body, in thought, in speech, and in deeds.

Above all, Great Leader and Guide, help us to be REVERENT in our faith, and loving toward all the faiths of our world and its people as well as their life choices. Let us revere our home and our world out-of-doors, so as to preserve it for our own children to enjoy, among the trees, along the streams, and on the hillsides. May we be thankful to their maker and help them to endure unto all ages.

In all these things we ask that you will help us. And may we never forget the Scout Oath to which we pledge ourselves, so that through your guidance, we may live these points of our Scout Law. Amen.
